The Healthy Schools Approach

So you want to learn more about Healthy Schools? We think that’s fantastic!

We’ve put together this page to give you a little bit more information about our Healthy Schools team: who we are, what we do, and most importantly how we can help to make your school even healthier!

We work with elementary and high schools, school boards and community partners in Simcoe Muskoka to enhance the physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual health of whole school communities.

That’s why our focus is on health for all to support academic achievement and student well-being. We know you’ve got a lot on your plate, so we help you to make healthy schools initiatives that complement your school learning/improvement plans, Safe and Accepting Schools and the Ministry of Education's Well-being Strategy. We use the Ministry of Education‘s Foundations for a Healthy School resource as a guiding tool for our work with you.

Our School Board Liaison Public Health Nurses (PHNs) support school boards with health initiatives and connect health unit programs with schools boards and schools to promote health.

Our Healthy Schools Public Health Nurses are geographically assigned to support schools in their local area with addressing school health-related priorities. They work with school staff, community partners, parents, and students to create a health action plan, implement activities and they share resources, tips and ideas to help schools meet their health-related goals.  They can also help connect your school with other health unit and community programs and services, and provide ongoing support throughout the school year.

Our Public Health Dietitian and Nutritionist help school boards and schools to create an environment that supports healthy eating. They also support curriculum needs related to healthy eating.

Hear firsthand how working with the healthy schools approach has changed one school environment.

To get started contact your local Healthy Schools public health nurse at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520.
