Families

Children learn and grow with you as a caregiver, guide and role model.  Your experience and understanding of your child’s early years is invaluable.  During the school years, you continue to play an important role in your child’s education.  We encourage you to work together with your child, the teacher and the school.  The evidence shows your interest helps your child to achieve success and have a positive schooling experience.

Getting involved at home

  • Show interest right from the first day of school
  • Be curious, asking detailed questions every day
  • Help them to arrive at school on time and ready to learn
  • Support everyone with good at-home routines
  • Listen and value your child’s point of view
  • Share ideas, and learn new things together
  • Focus on your child's strengths and talents
  • Make it clear that you value school and speak positively about school.

Getting Involved at School

Parent-teacher interviews, parent workshops, Healthy Schools committees and school council are ways you can get involved.  Schools also have meet-and-greet barbeques, carnivals, concerts and fun nights - great ways to come together.  You can be part of the school community in the ways that suit you and your family most.  Your child and the school will appreciate your interest.

Support for families

It is common to have questions about child growth, development, and parenting.  To support your learning, visit Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s Just For You parents section. It provides accurate and reliable information with topics listed from A-Z.  There are links to parent resources, programs and services as well.  If you would like more information or would like to speak to a public health nurse, please contact Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520.
