Food-Security

…of Simcoe Muskoka households said they had experienced food insecurity at least once in the past 12 months.

Children living in food insecure households experience poorer physical and mental health, and youth are at increased risk of depression, social anxiety and suicide. Food insecure adults also experience poorer physical and mental health, such as higher rates of depression, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.  Additionally, parents in food-insecure homes may feel embarrassed about not being able to feed their children, which can lead to feelings of social exclusion and isolation from neighbours and community.

What can be done?

You can: Learn more about the real causes of food insecurity.

Communities can: When organizing a food drive donate healthy food and educate donors about the real solutions that can help end hunger in the community.

Governments can:

  • Ensure that social assistance rates cover real living costs.
  • Provide a basic income. A basic income is a payment to eligible families or individuals that ensures a minimum income level, regardless of employment status.
  • Create policies that encourage good jobs with regular hours and benefits.
