SIMCOE MUSKOKA - Flu vaccine is now available across Simcoe and Muskoka, and the local health unit is encouraging the public to get immunized as soon as possible before the flu season is in full swing.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA - Flu vaccine is now available across Simcoe and Muskoka, and the local health unit is encouraging the public to get immunized as soon as possible before the flu season is in full swing.

One hundred and twenty pharmacies in the region are providing the vaccine for anyone aged 5 and up.  Those under 5 years of age can get their flu shot from their primary care providers and walk-in clinics.

Those with children under the age of 5 who do not have a health care provider, and those who do not have an Ontario health card number can make an appointment with the health unit by calling 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520.

With the flu shot now being so accessible through local pharmacies and health care providers, the health unit will no longer be providing flu clinics at their offices.

“This is still quite early in the flu season and so far we have seen very little flu in Ontario, so it’s an ideal time to get the vaccine,” said Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Colin Lee. “It’s safe, effective and getting it now will allow people to build up their immunity before flu begins to spread through our area.”

Influenza is ranked among the top 10 causes of death in Canada. Even in its milder forms it will cause fever, body aches, coughs and severe fatigue usually for at least a week. It can cause serious illness or death, especially in children under the age of 2, those over 65, and people with underlying medical conditions.

“With the flu shot available at pharmacies, it has become a quick and convenient means of ensuring everyone in the family is protected against the flu,” said Dr. Lee. “By getting the flu shot, you are not only protecting yourself, but decreasing the chance that you may pass the flu on to your family, friends and coworkers.

Physicians can provide the flu shot to children 6 months and up, while pharmacies can offer the shot to anyone 5 years of age and older. For children 2 to 17, a nasal spray vaccine is also available.
