Low-risk drinking guidelines awareness results in iPad2 win

20 Jul 2011

SIMCOE MUSKOKA – A Midland woman has won an iPad2 for her awareness of the health impacts of drinking beyond the low-risk drinking guidelines (LRDG).

Deborah Crawford was looking for information about well water testing on the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit website when the link to the LRDG page caught her attention. That link drove her to the howmanydrinks.org blog, where she correctly answered four quiz questions to enter a contest for an iPad2. The contest is continuing, with two more quizzes for a chance to win the second iPad2.

The low-risk drinking guidelines suggest that people should consume no more than two standard drinks in one day and that the weekly number of standard drinks should not be more than nine for women and 14 for men. Moderate drinking of alcohol increases the risk of chronic diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and strokes, liver disease and inflammation of the pancreas.

The blog, which aims to raise awareness around the LRDG, marks the health unit’s first foray into social media. Twitter and Facebook are also being used to increase interest in the issue and the iPad2 contest, as is traditional media.

For more information about the low-risk drinking guidelines and to enter the contest, visit the blog at www.howmanydrinks.org, see www.simcoemuskokahealth.org, or call Your Health Connection Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520.
