Nicotine therapy still available

17 Dec 2008

SIMCOE MUSKOKA – Free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is still available for those people who missed out on the recent quit smoking workshops hosted by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. Eight workshops were held throughout Simcoe and Muskoka, providing about 240 people with the tips, tools, and nicotine patches or inhalers they needed to quit smoking.

“We know that at any time, 80 per cent of smokers want to quit so the demand for support to quit smoking continues to be high, even after the workshops,” said Louise Wilson, Public Health Nurse. “We will continue to offer opportunities for a free supply of nicotine replacement for those people who are planning to quit and missed out on the workshops.”

Those who didn’t attend the workshops but are ready to quit can call the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) at 1-866-484-9022 or go online at www.stopstudy.ca to apply for the NRT.

All callers will be screened for eligibility and once registered will receive a five-week supply of NRT delivered by mail.

You can also call Smokers’ Helpline, for free personalized advice at 1-877-513-5333.

“It’s no secret most people who smoke would like to quit,” said Wilson. “If you are ready to try, set a quit date, make a plan, get support and contact CAMH to apply for the free nicotine patches or inhalers. It’s great that there is help out there. The good news is that many people quit every day – and you have it in you to quit too.”
