News Release

Last weeks for health unit flu shot clinics

Nov 20, 2013
Just a few clinics remain in the health unit's public flu vaccination campaign.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA - Just a few clinics remain in the health unit's public flu vaccination campaign.

Response so far has been moderate and organizers of the clinics say there should be spots available at any of the clinics through the online booking system.

The flu shot is available free of charge to all residents of Ontario six months of age and older. It protects against three strains of flu including the H1N1 flu that caused so much illness in 2009 and 2010.

“We have had a fairly quiet flu season so far,” said Laurie Stanford, manager of the vaccine programs at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. “So people may be thinking that they don't really need to get their flu shot this year. But flu season lasts until April and it makes sense to have the whole family immunized now rather than scramble when influenza starts making folks sick in larger numbers.”

The health unit has also been working with hospitals and other health care agencies to increase the number of health care professionals who get the flu shot each year.

“This is a very important means of preventing spread of influenza to health care patients,” Stanford said. “These are people who could suffer serious or even life threatening complications from the flu.”

Health Unit flu clinics are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you find those dates or locations inconvenient, there are many other alternatives to be immunized. Flu shots are also being offered at pharmacies throughout Simcoe and Muskoka, from health care professionals, and through smaller clinics being run by EMS and paramedic services.

For more information about the flu vaccine call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
