Health unit declares community-wide influenza activity

Dec 19, 2012
Simcoe Muskoka Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner has issued a declaration of community-wide influenza.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA – Simcoe Muskoka Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner has issued a declaration of community-wide influenza.

The declaration comes after assessing the flu activity in the community, a process that looks at emergency department visits, lab-confirmed cases of influenza, institutional outbreaks and doctor reports of fever and influenza-like illness.

The widespread flu activity has been ongoing since last week and the statement today simply recognizes that fact.

Dr. Gardner explained that the formal declaration, which includes informing the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care of the local situation, serves as a signal to health care partners of a need to enact policies and strategies to control the further spread of influenza.

Declaring community-wide spread also stresses the need for the general public to protect themselves against influenza. Protection measures include:

  • being vaccinated annually against the flu; the flu shot is currently an excellent match to the circulating flu strains and is recommended for anyone over 6 months of age,
  • frequent handwashing,
  • getting adequate sleep,
  • eating healthy foods and staying active,
  • staying home when ill and avoiding contact with other people,
  • avoiding visits to the hospital unless symptoms worsen.

More information about influenza is available on the health unit’s website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org, or by calling Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
