The H1N1 flu shot clinics open tomorrow (Tues. Nov 3) at six locations across the area and have been increased to operate five days a week (in most weeks) to immunize people who are high risk first, followed later in the month by everyone who wants to protect themselves with the vaccine.
“As we roll out the shot, it is imperative that we focus on immunizing those most at risk for serious complications first,” said Dr. Charles Gardner, Medical Officer of Health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.
High-risk residents who will get the shot first include:
- People under age 65 who have chronic medical conditions
- Children six months to five years of age
- Household members and care providers of people who are high risk but who cannot be immunized (e.g. infants under 6 months of age) or who may not respond to vaccines.
- Pregnant women
- People living in remote communities
- Health care workers involved in pandemic response or who deliver essential services.
“If you are not in one of these priority groups, please be patient and respect the sequencing,” Dr. Gardner said. “Wait to get your vaccine until after those who need it most have received it. We will let you know when to visit the clinic for your shot.”
The health unit has added Friday clinics to its schedule so that clinics can be held daily Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (excluding Nov. 11 in some locations) and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Clinic times and locations are posted on the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or by calling Your Health Connection at 721-7520 (1-877-721-7520).
Please bring your health card and driver’s license, if available, to speed the registration process.
