Youth from across Simcoe County recently completed an eight-week Photovoice project hosted by THINK CLEAR! and facilitated by public health nurses from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

Photovoice is a process that gives a voice to the people who most often aren’t heard. A research technique, Photovoice is based on the idea that when it comes to understanding community issues, local people—not outside professionals—are the experts. Using cameras safely and respectfully, youth age 15 to 19 years were invited to capture images they believe tell the story of drug and alcohol use in their community.

Parents, teachers, law enforcement personnel and healthcare providers are all concerned about youth and the potential for harm related to alcohol and other drug use.  However, many myths, misconceptions and assumptions abound.  Who better to present a clear picture than youth themselves! Their insights and perspectives will be used to promote dialogue and influence change in programs to prevent drug and alcohol use in Simcoe County.

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, a Gala displaying a collection of the youths’ photography is being held at the Barrie City Hall Rotunda. Invitations have been sent out to 200 guests to come out and enjoy the exhibit. The public is also welcome to drop in and share in a valuable learning experience. Following the gala the display is going on tour around Simcoe County to various municipal offices, recreation centres and libraries for the public to view. Contact THINK CLEAR! at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit for dates and locations.
