Shopping with a toddler: a good topic for Play together—Grow together

Feb 26, 2013
There are always shopping trips in the week, and often the only option is to bring your toddler along with you.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA - There are always shopping trips in the week, and often the only option is to bring your toddler along with you. If you make a few plans, it can be fun for both of you and a learning experience for your child. Talk to your child about the ground rules before you go (staying close, using a pleasant voice), and praise her when she follows them. Time the trip so it’s not conflicting with nap time. Keep the child busy with little projects, counting the items put in the shopping cart or remembering what is on the shopping list. In the end, you are teaching your child to become a good shopper.

You can find good tips and discussions about these and other parenting issues on the new Facebook page, Play together – Grow together. It’s a page tailor-made for parents of young infants and toddlers in Simcoe and Muskoka, with helpful information from public health nurses and a public health dietitian at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.
