The health unit has a mandate to â€œprevent the occurrence of rabies in humans.â€ This is no light responsibility: So far this year the health unit has investigated more than 1,100 animal exposures in Simcoe Muskoka, with 806 of those animals requiring quarantines.

This spring the Ontario government made important changes to laws governing tobacco industry products that will help our youth stay tobacco and nicotine free. When I was approached to participate in an alcohol-free challenge for the month of February as part of the health unitâ€™s Ready to be Thirsty campaign, I saw it as a great opportunity to raise awareness about the impacts of immoderate alcohol consumption on people's health in Simcoe Muskoka.
