PREPARATIONGoal for Client Intervention:

Encourage the replacement of inactivity with active living based upon client’s personal experience.

 

Intervention Options:

 

ADVISE:

  • Focus on meaningful benefits.
    Your ________________ will improve if you can plan the first and next steps to increasing the amount of activity in your day.
    Being active for 10 minute periods several times during the day can add up to staying healthy or improving your health.

ASSIST:

  • Assist to verbalize a plan with a starting point to increase activity level.
    Tell me what activity you enjoy.
    What time of day would be best to __________?
    When will you start to do it regularly?
  • Encourage the inclusion of family or peer support.
    Who is going to do this with you or encourage you to continue with it?
  • Discuss what has worked and not worked in the past.
    What worked and what didn’t work when you tried to be active before?
  • Encourage avoiding, changing or removing cues that get in the way of the activity.
    What do you see as your biggest barrier?
    How do you plan to get around it?
  • Normalize relapse as part of the process and a learning experience.
    Everybody experiences some set backs. It is how you learn from them and try again with a better plan that moves you forward.
