Intending to become more active in the next 6 months.

Encourage the examination of pros and cons of being more active.

Promote confidence in their ability to increase level of activity.

 

Intervention Options:

 

ADVISE:

  • Emphasize the benefits of being more active.
    People who are active regularly feel more energetic and less stressed.

ASSIST:

  • Encourage talking about their reasons for becoming more active.
    What do you want to achieve by becoming more active ?
  • Encourage talking about their concerns about the process of becoming more active.
    Do you think becoming more active will be easy or hard for you?
    What activity do you want to do?
  • Encourage examining some concerns and barriers to increasing activity.
    What could stop you from being more active?
  • Gently offer possible solutions that have worked for others.
    Some people have tried __________ to get around that.
  • Foster a positive belief in their ability to do it.
    Starting slowly, adding a little more each day is progress.
  • Provide information.

Canada’s Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults 18-64
Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for adults 18-64 recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week in bouts of 10 minutes or more.  More daily physical activity provides greater health benefits.

Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for Older Adults aged 65 and older 
Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for Older Adults aged 65 and older recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week in bouts of 10 minutes or more.  More daily physical activity provides greater health benefits.
