Active Living at Work

Finding time in our busy days to be active is a challenge. Two-income families have working parents who spend up to 60 per cent of their waking hours in the workplace. So what better place to work in some exercise?

Imagine ...

  • starting the workday feeling refreshed
  • returning from your break ready to take on the next task
  • getting home to the family with energy to spare

Exercise can be a way of rescuing your mind, body and soul from the day's tensions and hassles. It gives you private time to do something for yourself before you have to "switch hats" and take on an evening role as roommate, spouse or parent.

You'll likely find ...

  • staff turnover drops
  • fewer on-the-job injuries and accidents
  • working relationships usually end up friendlier
  • work gets done in the time spent
  • pleasant work settings also attract and keep the best employees, and inspire staff to talk to others about how your company cares

Exercise on the job

  • Try stretch breaks before and during the day
  • What about early-morning or after-work exercise groups
  • Start a house league team
  • Challenge other departments to a game of volleyball or street hockey in the parking lot
  • Make stairwells more pleasant to use
  • Company events can be more active ones and include workers' families
  • Pair company picnics with activities planned by staff
  • Install bicycle racks
  • Save gas and the environment by cycling to work
  • Take inventory of what do you have on site. Explore your resources including equipment, space and money.
  • Find out what people want and need and how the workplace can offer it. Invite everyone's ideas

Those Boots are made for Walkin'

Walking is one of the best ways to be active and improve your health. You don't have to be a speed walker to benefit. When done at a slow pace walking mostly burns fat for fuel. When you pick up the pace the body begins to shift fuel from fats to carbohydrates--your body still burns fat but will also start to switch sugar into energy to add a little more pep to your step.

Because walking is a fat-burning, heart-pumping activity that can be done almost anywhere, it is a great way to keep your weight healthy. You can feel great, be fit and be healthy. Here's a few ways to build more walking into your days:

  • Skip the elevator--use the stairs
  • Go one or two extra blocks to the next bus stop
  • Walk your kids to school
  • Take walk break rather than a coffee break at work
  • Make your dog smile--go for walks more often
  • Try a family walk in the evening
