Food Safety

Under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, public health inspectors must inspect a wide range of premises to protect the health of Simcoe Muskoka residents. Under the Act public health inspectors have the authority to take enforcement measures, such as issue an order to close, if conditions at food premise are considered hazardous.

To prevent foodborne illnesses public health inspectors:

  • provide information to the general public on food safety
  • carry out routine inspections in restaurants, food stores and other food premises to be sure the food is safe and will not cause illness to the consumer
  • provide food handler certification courses (Proton)
  • consult with new food premise operators before their business openings to be sure they are in compliance with all pertinent legislation.
  • receive information about potential health hazards in a food premises and conduct investigations
  • respond to fires, floods and other emergencies within a premise and be sure food and food handing is safe before re-opening.

When a recall or advisory has been issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) public health inspectors work very close with CFIA and the Ministry of Health to locate the problem food and remove it.
