Health Unit

Position Statements

From time to time the health unit will issue a Position Statement outlining known research, weighing options for response on specific issues related to the public's health.

Position statement on municipal water fluoridation

In January 2009 the health unit published the Health Focus Report, Oral Health in Simcoe and Muskoka. The report identified some significant dental health issues, including the lack of fluoridation in the majority of the drinking supply in Simcoe County. The position statement ratified by the Simcoe Muskoka District Board of Health on April 15 afffirms public health's long-standing support of municipal water fluoridation as a cost-effective, universal means of improving dental health for the entire population.

In addition, here is the Feb 18, 2011 news release stating the position on water fluoridation of Association of Local Public Health Agencies (alPHa).

Support for fluoridation from Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health

Responding to a debate about community water fluoridation in Muskoka, Dr. Arlene King responded with a a letter to the general public in April, 2011.

Position statement on the non-essential use of pesticides

The purpose of this paper is to summarize key findings related to the potential for health effects from pesticides. This document is not intended to provide a critical and comprehensive review of the toxicological and epidemiological literature on the health effects of pesticides. Its purpose is to provide some background and perspective to guide the health unit’s response to public and municipal concerns related to the nonessential use of pesticides.
