SIMCOE MUSKOKA – Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the region, as wind chills could exceed –30° C in Simcoe County and –35° C in Muskoka.

The extreme cold conditions are forecast to continue into Saturday.

Decreasing temperatures can put everyone at risk for cold-related illness or injury, such as frostbite and hypothermia. Health risks are greatest for homeless people, outdoor workers and sports enthusiasts, older adults, infants and children, and persons with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart or lung disease.

To reduce your risk, avoid exposure to the cold by covering exposed skin with a hat, gloves, scarf, and take regular breaks from the cold, in warm locations whenever possible.

For more information about cold and its impact on your health, call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., connect with the health unit on Facebook and Twitter, or visit simcoemuskokahealth.org.
