The flu: well worth protecting yourself

Nov 12, 2014
It’s not “just a cold.” If you’ve ever had the flu, you know you don’t want to go through it again.

It’s not “just a cold.” If you’ve ever had the flu, you know you don’t want to go through it again.

Influenza, or the flu, comes on quickly with a fever between 39 C and 40 C (102-104 F). It brings headache and body aches that are often severe. Coughing can be severe. It leaves you feeling exhausted for weeks. And in the worst cases, it can lead to hospitalization, pneumonia and even death.

The flu also spreads easily, so if you catch it, you’ll soon be sharing your agony with others. If it spreads to young children, or the frail elderly, it could threaten their lives.

The solution? Get the flu shot, wash your hands regularly, clean and disinfect surfaces you touch regularly, and stay home when you’re sick.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is running free flu clinics every Wednesday and Saturday until Nov. 26. To book your appointment, visit www.smdhu.org.

If those dates aren’t convenient, there are now about 105 pharmacies in the region offering flu shots to those 5 years and older, and local physicians also provide the shot.

If you have questions about influenza, call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..
