Health care facilities recognized for flu protection

May 06, 2015
Two long-term care facilities, the IOOF Seniors Home Inc. in Barrie and the Collingwood Nursing Home, achieved a 100 per cent staff influenza immunization rate in the annual Influenza Immunization Challenge, an outstanding achievement in the continuing goal to protect residents, patients and staff from the spread of influenza.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA – Two long-term care facilities, the IOOF Seniors Home Inc. in Barrie and the Collingwood Nursing Home, achieved a 100 per cent staff influenza immunization rate in the annual Influenza Immunization Challenge, an outstanding achievement in the continuing goal to protect residents, patients and staff from the spread of influenza.

The Simcoe Muskoka Influenza Immunization Challenge recognition event, a collaboration between the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and the North Simcoe Muskoka Infection Control Network, that was held Wednesday May 6 in Orillia, saw 25 long-term care facilities and two local hospitals recognized for achieving bronze, silver or gold-level standards for staff immunizations against influenza. The IOOF Long-Term Care Seniors home, and the Collingwood Nursing Home as well as 10 other long-term care facilities, received gold awards.

“We are proud of the efforts from all of our staff at achieving 100% influenza vaccination rates. It demonstrates our care and concern for our residents, co-workers and our families,” said Peter Zober, Collingwood Nursing Home president and administrator. “We understand how serious influenza can be for our residents and know how important it is to be immunized against the illness.”

The standards are set for rates of staff immunizations ranging from 70 to more than 90 per cent. For a second year the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital received a silver award. Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare received a bronze award, and Waypoint Centre for Mental Health received an honourable mention for increasing influenza immunization rates by more than 10 per cent over last year.

The challenge aims to increase the number of health care workers receiving their annual flu immunization. Health care workers who are immunized against the flu help to reduce their own risk of illness and absenteeism as well as flu-related illnesses and deaths in those they care for. Now completing its fifth year, the challenge effort has resulted in an upward trend in health care worker influenza immunization rates in Simcoe and Muskoka, with median rates in local long-term care facilities as well as hospitals trending above provincial rates.

“All of our health care facilities deserve recognition for continuing to improve staff immunization rates against influenza, because it shows a strong commitment toward protecting the safety of their patients,” said Dr. Colin Lee, Associate Medical Officer of Health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. “Influenza is a serious illness, especially for the vulnerable in our care, and the best way to protect them and ourselves is with a flu shot.”

All 29 long-term care facilities and seven hospitals in Simcoe Muskoka participated in this year’s challenge. Influenza immunization of health care workers and staff in long-term care remains high with a coverage rate of 88 per cent. There has also been a significant improvement in staff/volunteer coverage in hospitals in recent years.
