Breastfeeding Week begins with global challenge

Sep 25, 2017
SIMCOE MUSKOKA - Mothers and families across Simcoe and Muskoka are planning on joining the Global Breastfeeding Challenge at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA - Mothers and families across Simcoe and Muskoka are planning on joining the Global Breastfeeding Challenge at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The event launches National Breastfeeding Week, Canada’s version of World Breastfeeding Week from October 1 to 7. Challenge locations have been arranged in Orillia, Barrie, Collingwood, Innisfil and Bradford.

“The Global Breastfeeding Challenge is a fun and friendly competition in which families come together and attempt to set the record for the most children breastfeeding simultaneously,” explained Natalie Riewe, the manager of child health at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. “Being able to breastfeed whenever and wherever a child is hungry or needs comfort is critical to breastfeeding success.”

Some local municipal councils have been approached to proclaim the week, and several have begun to implement policies to encourage breastfeeding in public spaces. The City of Orillia, Penetanguishene and Collingwood along with other communities recognize the right of women to breastfeeding in public and the important health benefits of breastfeeding for both the parent and child, and the right to breastfeed in all public places owned and operated by the municipality. By passing policies at the municipal level that support breastfeeding, municipalities help strengthen the development of a breastfeeding culture.

Throughout the year, the health unit holds Breastfeeding Place drop-ins where mothers can share their experiences and get support from a public health nurse on breastfeeding and a range of infant and child health and development topics. Other services are also available, listed by location, on the health unit’s website at

National Breastfeeding Week provides an opportunity for people all across Canada to come together to encourage, protect and support breastfeeding anywhere, anytime.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) theme for World Breastfeeding Week this year is “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together”. It is about working together for the common good. A team effort is needed to make breastfeeding work. Sustaining Breastfeeding-Together reminds us that we all have a part to play in creating and enabling environments for women to breastfeed successfully.
