Health unit set to launch flu shot clinics across region

Oct 21, 2013
The health unit’s flu vaccine clinics will be starting on Nov. 2 across Simcoe and Muskoka, running every Wednesday and Saturday through the month.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA – The health unit’s flu vaccine clinics will be starting on Nov. 2 across Simcoe and Muskoka, running every Wednesday and Saturday through the month.

People can book their appointments in advance, through the online booking system on the health unit’s website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.

This year more than 80 pharmacies are also offering flu shots to people aged 5 and over, making it more convenient than ever to protect yourself and those around you from influenza. As well, the shots are available from personal physicians and at some workplaces where employee immunization programs have been arranged.

The health unit’s clinics provide quick access to the free flu shot for between 11,000 and 14,000 people each year.

Those without computer access can phone to make arrangements, through Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They can also drop into the clinics but risk longer waits.

Laurie Stanford, manager of the vaccine preventable diseases program at the health unit, recommends the flu shot for everyone from six months of age to 90 and beyond. It’s the most effective means of preventing the spread one of the most unpleasant diseases of the winter season.

“We really like to stress that people aren’t getting the flu vaccine just to protect themselves; it prevents the flu from spreading to others around them,” Stanford said. “It’s a selfless gesture that protects babies, the frail elderly and others whose immune systems are compromised who could develop life-threatening complications from the flu.”
