May 08, 2013

SIMCOE MUSKOKA – Know someone or an organization that works hard to encourage and support others to play, live and be tobacco free? Nominate them for a Tobacco-Free Champion Award.

The awards are presented annually by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit to celebrate World No Tobacco Day, May 31. They are given to community members and organizations whose efforts help to reduce tobacco product use – the Number 1 cause of preventable death and disease in Canada.

Past winners have included housing managers who offer smoke-free housing options for tenants, businesses that help their employees quit smoking and individuals committed to helping youth steer clear of smoking, chew and other tobacco products.

Nominations are available on the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or by calling Your Health Connection at 1-877-721-7520 or 705-721-7520. A full list of past winners is also posted on the web.

The deadline is Wednesday, May 22 and winners will be announced on World No Tobacco Day.

Tobacco products kill more than five million people around the world every year including 37,000 in Canada. Quitting tobacco use is the single best thing a person can do to protect and promote their health.
