Flu shot campaign hits midway point

Nov 16, 2012
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s public flu vaccine campaign has hit the halfway point, with about 24 more clinics remaining.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA – The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s public flu vaccine campaign has hit the halfway point, with about 24 more clinics remaining.

“There are reports of illness from influenza beginning to appear across the province now,” said Mary Ann Holmes, acting manager of the vaccine program. “So if people want to avoid getting sick and spreading the flu to others in their families or offices, they should consider booking a flu shot soon.”

Provincial surveillance has shown sporadic or localized flu activity through central and southern Ontario.

Clinics are being held on Wednesdays and Saturdays through the month of November at six different sites each day throughout Simcoe and Muskoka.

Appointments can be booked by going to the health unit’s website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org and clicking on the red “flu online” button, or by phoning Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For those unable to book appointments, time has been allotted at all clinics for drop-in business.

As well, pharmacists who have received special training are now able to administer flu vaccine in Ontario. The response has been positive in Simcoe and Muskoka, Holmes said. To date, the health unit has provided 5,300 doses of the vaccine to the 23 pharmacies that have been set up to deliver the shots. A further 13 pharmacies are also making arrangements.

Another clinic has been established by Georgian College at its Barrie campus, on Tuesday, November 20.

The flu vaccine can also be obtained from personal health care professionals.
