Quitters become winners in Driven to Quit Challenge

Apr 24, 2012
A record 37,310 adults across Ontario – including 2,310 from our area – pledged to quit using tobacco products in this year’s Driven to Quit Challenge for a chance to drive away in a new car.

A record 37,310 adults across Ontario – including 2,310 from our area – pledged to quit using tobacco products in this year’s Driven to Quit Challenge for a chance to drive away in a new car.

The grand prize winner was 28-year-old Amy Ladouceur of Hamilton, ON. The regional winner for the central east area which includes Simcoe Muskoka was Eric Huynh from Mississauga.

“It’s disappointing we didn’t have a local winner, but everyone who made a quit attempt is moving closer to becoming tobacco free and that is the biggest prize of all,” said Leslie Gordon, tobacco program co-ordinator with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. “It is the single best thing you can do to protect your health.”

Smoking rates in this area are about 25 per cent, or one in four adults. The provincial rate is 20 per cent. But, says Gordon, ongoing surveying of adults in Simcoe Muskoka shows the majority (62 per cent in 2011) are considering quitting. About half had made at least one quit attempt in the past 12 months.

The commitment to quit is reflected in the number of people who participate in the annual Driven to Quit Challenge. For the past few years this area has been among the top three in numbers of people pledging to quit. This year Simcoe Muskoka had the third highest number of entries province-wide, behind only Ottawa with 2,443 participants and Toronto with 4,709. The average age of the entrants in Simcoe Muskoka was 42.

The Driven to Quit Challenge is presented annually by the Canadian Cancer Society in partnership with local health units. A full list of winners is available at driventoquit.ca.

Support is available for anyone who wants to quit, or who needs help staying tobacco free through Smokers’ Helpline by both telephone counseling at 1-877-513-5333 or on the web at smokershelpline.ca.
