While it is never too late to quit smoking, the last opportunity for local residents to register to quit in March for a chance to win a car is midnight, February 29 at www.driventoquit.ca.

Participants who register by the deadline and stay tobacco free for the month of March qualify for the random draw to win a 2012 Ford Fusion hybrid or an Edge. There are also two $5,000 vacation getaways available and seven regional prizes of $2,000.

Two Barrie area men were winners in last year’s challenge. One received the $1,000 early bird prize and the second was a $2,000 regional prize winner.

”Both men say their families were the motivation for their quit attempts – one quit after 49 years to support his wife who suffered a heart attack, while the other was a new dad who wanted to protect the health of his baby – but in looking after their loved ones they also did the single best thing they could to protect their own health,” said Leslie Gordon, tobacco program coordinator with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

The health unit, Smokers’ Helpline and health care providers are all working to help people break their addiction with tobacco. Supports are available to help deal with cravings, to help plan a successful quit and to provide one-to-one counseling either by phone or text.

“Make this the year you quit,” said Gordon. “Go online and commit to try at driventoquit.ca. And if you try and then have a slip, don’t give up. You will succeed if you don’t quit quitting.”

More information is available on the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or call Smokers’ Helpline at 1-877-513-5333.
