Get your pet vaccinated at a low-cost rabies clinic

Low-cost rabies vaccination clinics offered by participating veterinarians begin this weekend, providing an economical and convenient way for residents to get their pets vaccinated against the disease.

“Rabies, which is usually spread to pets and livestock by wildlife such as bats, foxes, raccoons or skunks, is entirely preventable with immunization,” said Brenda Armstrong, manager of health hazards for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. “These clinics are a great way for people to protect the health of their pets and their family.”

Rabies is a virus that is spread through saliva, usually through bite wounds. Once symptoms of the virus appear, the virus is always fatal in humans and animals.

The low-cost rabies clinics for animals older than three months are being held at participating veterinary clinics beginning Saturday Oct. 1 through to October 29. Cats and dogs must be caged or on a leash to attend the clinics. The cost is $18 to $20 (cash only).

As well as the mandatory rabies vaccination you can help prevent the spread of rabies by not allowing your pets to roam free and by keeping them indoors at night. Remind your family to stay away from unfamiliar dogs and cats as well as all wildlife, including bats.

If you come in contact with a bat, or find one in a room, alive or dead, where you have been sleeping, have the bat tested for rabies. If you have been bitten by an animal, immediately wash the wound well with soap and water and see your health-care provider or go to the hospital. All animal bites must be reported to the health unit.
