Staffers at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit office on West Street are packing boxes and getting ready for a move to the new Common Roof complex at the intersection of Front and Queen Street.

The health unit will be closing its doors for a day on Friday, Sept. 30, and will be reopening at the Common Roof on Monday, Oct. 3.

The new location brings the health unit closer to the city’s downtown, providing easy access for the public to the agency’s full spectrum of services, from vaccines to food and water safety, to healthy lifestyle promotion, to family and prenatal health, and protection from health hazards and infectious disease.

It’s also on the city transit system’s south route with stops nearby at King and Gill Streets.

“Our intent in moving to this site is to provide a highly visible location where the public can walk, take transit or bicycle to the health unit office,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner. “It means our clients will be able to choose healthy, active transportation to reach us and reduce automobile emissions, both of which are long-term priorities with public health.”

“It will also provide us with some exciting opportunities to share expertise and partner with the other agencies in the Common Roof complex,” he added.

The new location offers a variety of advantages.

*      The Orillia Common Roof will be one of the stop points for the health unit’s new mobile dental van under the Healthy Smiles Ontario program which provides free dental treatment for eligible children 17 years of age and under.

*      It is an affordable, multi-tenant facility that will allow us to use resources efficiently by sharing space, services and infrastructure, and will provide us opportunities to build our partnerships with other organizations.

*      The other agencies located in the complex will be close at hand for individuals and families seeking services from other social and health services.

The health unit has been located in a storefront location at the bottom of West Street since 2000.

Office hours in the new site will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but closed for lunch hour, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
