Immunization clinics part of back-to-school plans

Aug 17, 2011
Special immunization clinics are running in Simcoe and Muskoka to help students get their shots up to date before school begins.

Special immunization clinics are running in Simcoe and Muskoka to help students get their shots up to date before school begins.

The clinics will be taking place at six health unit offices throughout the region. No appointments are necessary.

 “We have had a couple of rounds of clinics through the summer and this last round gives parents a chance to get ahead of the game the week before school begins,” said Laurie Stanford, the manager of vaccine preventable diseases with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

Public health units are required to keep the immunization records of all students. In Simcoe and Muskoka it means tracking the records of about 100,000 students.

Through the summer, hundreds of questionnaires have been mailed out requesting updated immunization information on students.

This information is used to protect the health of all students in schools most particularly those who have not been vaccinated, in the event of an outbreak of any of the listed diseases. The Immunization of School Pupils Act authorizes health units to suspend any students for whom up to date immunization records are not on file.

Parents are asked to bring in the most current immunization records on their children to the clinics.

The clinics take place during the week of August 24 to 31, as follows. They all run from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

*      Aug. 24, 2-25 King Street South, Cookstown

*      Aug. 29, 5 Pineridge Gate, Gravenhurst

*      Aug. 29, 12-575 West Street South, Orillia

*      Aug. 30, 865 Hugel Avenue, Unit B, Midland

*      Aug. 31, 280 Pretty River Parkway, Collingwood

*      Aug. 31, 15 Sperling Drive, Barrie

The clinic schedule is also posted on the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org, along with other information about immunization for students. You can also call Your Health Connection weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520, for any information about immunization.
