Do you know a person, business or organization that has gone over and above to promote tobacco-free living in our area? If so we want to hear from you.

Do you know a person, business or organization that has gone over and above to promote tobacco-free living in our area? If so we want to hear from you.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is gathering nominations for its annual Tobacco-Free Champions Awards being presented in May.

“The more recipients we have the better,” says Leslie Gordon, tobacco program coordinator at the health unit. “It’s a celebration of people making a difference. We want to recognize all the work being done to make the places we play, live and gather tobacco free.

“The process to nominate a person or group is simple,” she said. “Just send us a short outline (150 words or less) explaining what your nominee has done that you think deserves recognition.”

Nomination forms are available on the health unit website or at any health unit office. The deadline for submissions is May 2 and champions will be announced for World No Tobacco Day, May 31.

The annual celebration recognizes the progress being made globally to eliminate the use of tobacco – the only legally sold product that when used as directed will kill one of every two long-term users. In Ontario tobacco products kill 13,000 in Ontario each year.

Past winners have included local municipalities that enacted outdoor smoke-free bylaws; soccer mom Wendy Dodd, who encouraged the Alliston Soccer Club to become a tobacco-free organization; the Georgian Bay Family Health Team for making quit supports for their patients a top priority; Enaahtig Healing Lodge and Learning Centre for its residential smoking cessation programs for Aboriginal peoples; and the owner of Muskoka’s Thermo Seal Insulation Systems, Clement Aluminum, who offered his employees a financial incentive to quit smoking.
