Quit using tobacco in March—you could drive away a winner

Jan 13, 2011
If quitting tobacco is on your “to do” list this year, then the annual Driven to Quit Challenge should be too.

If quitting tobacco is on your “to do” list this year, then the annual Driven to Quit Challenge should be too.

The challenge gives you a great reason to set a quit date no later than February 28. Stay quit for the month of March and you become eligible for a chance to win a 2011 Honda hybrid CR-Z or Insight hybrid or other prizes valued at $25,000.

“Last year more than 2,100 local residents put down their cigarettes, cigars, chew tobacco and pipes to make a quit attempt in the challenge,” said Leslie Gordon, tobacco program coordinator for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. “We expect even more participation this year as more and more people work to become tobacco free.”

The provincial challenge is open to tobacco users 19 and older by registering at You need to include the name of a support buddy who will help you stay on track during the challenge.  If you stay quit and are chosen for a prize, your support buddy wins too, with a $200 gift card.

“The best plan for success is to prepare for the times when you will have cravings,” said Gordon. “There are products on the market that can help curb cravings. Talk to your pharmacist or health care provider to find out what’s available.”

Other suggestions include changing your routine if you associate certain activities with tobacco use. At work prepare for coffee breaks by bringing a book and staying inside when others go out to smoke, or better still go for a brisk walk.

Other tips and supports are available through the Canadian Cancer Society’s Smokers’ Helpline which has both a toll-free telephone service (1-877-513-5333) and web-based support service (

To help you stay on track, decide what is motivating you to quit. Is it your family, your health, your finances? Once you have a clear vision about why you want to succeed, sign up for the challenge and picture yourself driving away a winner this spring.
