Board of Health chair acclaimed; Health unit strikes mutual assistance agreement for emergencies

Board of Health chair acclaimed

Tay Township Mayor Scott Warnock has been acclaimed for a second term in his role as chair of the Board of Health of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. Barry Ward also has been acclaimed for his second term as vice chair of the board. Election of executive positions to the Board of Health is conducted annually at the January meeting.

The Board also welcomed a new provincial appointee, Dr. Elizabeth Saul. Dr. Saul is a veterinarian with a specialty in alternative dispute resolution and mediating veterinary-related issues, and is a past president of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario. She and her husband also volunteer with Barrie Out of the Cold. Dr. Saul is one of seven provincial appointees on the Board of Health; the remaining nine members are appointed from their municipal councils. More information about the Board of Health can be found on the health unit’s website, www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.

Health unit strikes mutual assistance agreement for emergencies

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has teamed up with three other central Ontario health units to help each other in major emergencies. Agreements have been signed with Peterborough, Durham and the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge health units, allowing each to call on the others to quickly deploy resources to cover the extra needs for personnel, services or equipment in any type of major emergency. Director of Environmental Health Steve Rebellato explained that under the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Protocol, the province requires health units to have continuity plans in place to ensure critical public health services can continue. The mutual assistance agreement helps fulfill that obligation.

Preceding this, a mutual assistance agreement was first created in 2010 with four other local health units in preparation for the G8 Summit held in Huntsville.
