Health unit considers closer ties with LHIN

The health unit has opened discussions with the North Simcoe Local Health Integration Network to explore best ways to formalize closer ties.

Patients First, a provincial discussion paper on improving health care in Ontario published in December, recommends LHINs expand their planning role to include a number of new health agencies. It proposes “that LHINs and public health units . . . align their work and ensure that population and public health priorities inform health planning, funding and delivery.” The most significant change in relationships would see all LHINs acting as the flow-through body for provincial funding of health units. Currently LHINs do not have any planning role to play in public health, home care or community care, although there has often been collaborative work between the agencies.

Last week the Simcoe Muskoka Board of Health learned that Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner had had productive discussions with the local LHIN CEO Jill Tettmann. The Board of Health will submit a letter to Minister of Health Eric Hoskins outlining local feedback on the provincial discussion paper. The input will stress the need to continue the full mandate of public health, and also recommends maintaining the Simcoe Muskoka Board of Health as the governance body, with its municipal representation.

Board of Health elects chair for 2016

The Simcoe Muskoka Board of Health re-elected Barrie city councilor Barry Ward as its chair at the Board’s January meeting. It will be Ward’s fifth year in the chair. Scott Warnock, Mayor of the Township of Tay, was also re-elected as vice-chair.

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the board of health takes place February 17 at 9:15 a.m.
in the Barrie office, 15 Sperling Drive.
