Health unit teams with Grey-Bruce for major conference

As many as 300 public health inspectors from across Canada will be gathering at Blue Mountain Conference Centre in September for the annual Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors conference.

The conference this year is being jointly organized by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and Grey Bruce Health Unit. The theme, “Healthy Places, Healthy People” reflects the ultimate goal of all efforts of public health inspectors.

Plans are proceeding well, food safety program manager Fran Gelder told the board of health last week. The busy three-day program involves workshops running a range of topics from healthy community design and municipal planning to brownfield management to lead in garden soils to the newest information about water quality.

The conference will be anchored by a keynote speech from Dr. David Butler-Jones, the Chief Public Health Officer with the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Chief nursing officer welcomed at health unit

It’s been a bit of a return to her roots for Karen Ellis-Scharfenberg, who was welcomed by the board of health as the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s new chief nursing officer.

Karen had worked with the health unit from 1989 to 2002, as a public health nurse and later as manager of the Healthy Babies Healthy Children program. In the intervening years, she served as quality assurance coordinator with the College of Nurses of Ontario and as an associate director with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. She has been frequently published in academic journals, writing on nursing practice, healthy work environments and other related topics.

Karen assumes leadership over roughly 145 nursing professionals who work at the health unit.

In 2011 the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care announced that among its new Ontario Public Health Organizational Standards, chief nursing officers would be required at all health units by January 2013.
