National kudos for health unit
Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit was one of four employers across Canada singled out for honours by the Canadian Nursing Association (CAN).
The CNA announced its 2010 Employer Recognition Awards on May 12, citing the support and resources the health unit has provided its nursing staff in obtaining or renewing national certification and for encouraging certified nurses to become mentors.
Rebecca Harbridge and Jennifer Tonn, two public health nurses in the health unit’s tobacco program, completed their national certification exams last year, and were responsible for submitting the nomination for the health unit.
“Not many colleagues taking the certification with us could say they had the same kind of support, including attending the teleconferenced study group classes,” Harbridge said.
In noting the award, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner said “what I found most touching was the fact that the nomination for this award came from our own staff. It speaks volumes about the loyalty of our employees, and it is very rewarding to know our policies are producing the planned results in advancing the skills required to serve our communities.”
