News and Updates
August 29, 2008 - The Cost of Healthy Eating in Simcoe County, Summer 2008 edition is now available from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.
Every May/June health units across Ontario are mandated to conduct a food costing survey in grocery stores across our region, using a survey protocol developed by the Ministry of Health. The following two handouts have been prepared to present the results of the 2008 Nutritious Food Basket survey. These will be of interest to community organizations/groups and others with an interest in how much it costs individuals and families in Simcoe or Muskoka to eat a basic healthy diet based on survey food costing results. These handouts are titled:
- "The Cost of Healthy Eating in Muskoka, Summer 2008 edition"
- "The Cost of Healthy Eating in Simcoe County, Summer 2008 edition"
Community partners and members of the public can order these and other available SMDHU handouts on health topics by calling 721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 extension 8323, and following the voice mail prompts to place a resource order.

July 2, 2008 — Community Food Advisor Program Closed
Earlier in June we received a letter from the Barrie Community Health Centre informing partners that they had made the decision to close the Community Food Advisor (CFA) program (as of June 1). They indicated that resources to sustain the program have been diminishing over the last 15 years and they no longer have the resources to sustain the program. They also indicated that they approached a number of community agencies to partner on the program to try to sustain it, but these agencies were also facing challenges with scarce resources.
Good for Life has partnered with the CFA program for several years and recognizes the time and expertise these volunteers have given to the community. There presence in the community will no doubt be missed.
