Get Moving

Are you ready for some great news?

Research now shows you don't have to run a marathon to be healthy-all you have to do is pick an activity you enjoy and "get moving" a little each day. Choose to do the types of activities that work best for you and your family. In fact it is important to do different things to improve strength, endurance, and flexibility.

More good news

Your activity does not even have to be continuous or intense to be good for you-short periods of activity in 10 minute slots can also help. To get the most benefit, The Canada Physical Activity Guide recommends that you do a total of 30 to 60 minutes of activity over the course of the day. And it doesn't matter whether you move fast or slow because all types of activity are good. Walking is just as good an activity as running.

Why not try:

  biking playing frisbee
  walking the dog hiking
  swimming weightlifting
dancing playing catch with the kids
  cross country skiing yoga
  hockey climbing stairs
  yard work stretching

Do what you enjoy and fit them into your day as you like. You decide what you do and how much effort you put into it. As long as your total amount of activity in a day equals 1hour of light effort your health will gain. If you want to do more intense activity, you can do a shorter period of time. Find out what works best for you, and have fun being active.
