Beat the heat this summer
Summertime in Simcoe Muskoka is so brief that by the time it arrives it's only natural to want to spend as much time outside enjoying our beaches, trails and parks as possible. If we're not prepared however, the rays of the sun, the combination of high temperatures and humidity, and smoggy air can cause some health problems that can really put a damper on the season.
Those especially at risk when the temperature rises and air quality deteriorates include the elderly, infants and preschoolers, people with chronic illnesses like heart conditions, and people who are involved in strenuous work or activity out doors for prolong periods.
The good news is that with common sense and proper care you can enjoy your summer without getting ill.
- Practice sun safety - Stay out of the sun during peak hours, always use sunscreen, seek shade and wear a hat.
- Prevent heat-related illness - Stay cool, stay hydrated, be sensible about exertion in hot humid weather and seek places that have air conditioning,
- Pay attention to air quality - Avoid exercising outdoors during smog alerts; it you have to, take plenty of breaks, exercise in a shaded area, stay hydrated and if you run or cycle, avoid busy streets.
